Effect of Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation on Recovery from Gaze Palsy

چکیده
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) on recovery from gaze palsy. Twenty patients with gaze palsy, (14 males and 6 females) their age ranged from 20–63 years with mean age 47.9±12.5 years. Duration of gaze palsy ranged from 4–24 months with mean of 10.6±5.23. Twelve patients were post stroke and eight patients with definite multiple sclerosis. They received galvanic vestibular stimulation three times/ week for four weeks. They were assessed by using three point scale for gaze deviation, line bisection test and line crossing test. These measures were recorded before the vestibular stimulation (pre treatment) and after four weeks (post treatment). Results of this study showed that, there was significant decrease in the grades of gaze deviation, significant improvement in line bisection and line crossing. It was concluded that, galvanic vestibular stimulation is a beneficial central non invasive modality to improve recovery from gaze palsy. (Egypt J. Neurol. Psychiat. Neurosurg., 2005, 42(2): 359-364).

Effect of gaze on postural responses to neck proprioceptive and vestibular stimulation in humans.
1. We studied the effect of gaze orientation on postural responses evoked by vibration of neck dorsal muscles or by galvanic stimulation of the vestibular system during quiet standing in healthy humans. Various gaze orientations were obtained by different combinations of horizontal head-on-feet (-90, -45, 0, 45, 90 deg) and eye-in-orbit (-30, 0, 30 deg) positions. The instantaneous centre of fo...

To determine whether subjects with somatosensory loss show a compensatory increase in sensitivity to vestibular stimulation, we compared the amplitude of postural lean in response to four different intensities of bipolar galvanic stimulation in subjects with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (PNP) and age-matched control subjects. To determine whether healthy and neuropathic subjects show similar ...
متن کاملComparing Techniques to Reduce Simulator Adaptation Syndrome and Improve Naturalistic Behaviour during Simulated Driving
Electrical stimulation of the vestibular sensory system during virtual environment simulations reduces the incidence of simulator adaptation syndrome (SAS). However, interactions between vestibular stimulation and complex visual scenery can increase oculomotor symptoms. This study examined an alternative technique to reduce symptoms of SAS using the application of galvanic cutaneous stimulation...
متن کاملEffect of galvanic vestibular stimulation on movement-related cortical potential
[Purpose] This study examined the effects of galvanic vestibular stimulation on motion-related cortical potential. [Subjects and Methods] Fourty healthy female adult subjects each received galvanic vestibular stimulation or sham treatment. For galvanic vestibular stimulation, the anode and cathode were applied to the right and left mastoid processes, respectively, for 10 minutes. Motion-related...

In this dataset, we analyzed galvanic-evoked head movements (GEHMs) in the spatial planes of yaw, and roll in normal and unilaterally labyrinthectomized (UL) Wistar rats. The rats were assigned in 4 groups of 10: control, sham, right-UL and left-UL. Bilateral galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) was presented by our "ring-shaped electrode" design (see "Short-term galvanic vestibular stimulatio...
